TORIN DEREK

Born and raised in North Philadelphia, Torin Derek was surrounded by music, faith, and the arts from an early age. Raised in the church in the heart of the city, his upbringing was deeply rooted in creativity and musical expression. His mother, a trained lyric soprano and ballet dancer, introduced him to discipline and artistry, while his father’s love for jazz exposed him to the richness and soul of music beyond the church walls. From gospel services filled with renowned artists to a home constantly alive with music, the arts became the foundation of his identity. Throughout middle school and high school, Torin’s gift for singing quickly stood out, leading him to become a featured voice in the first and only gospel choir at his school.

Torin later pursued music studies in both classical and jazz performance while in college, further shaping his artistry and versatility as a vocalist and creative. By the age of 20, he was already performing professionally with a local Philadelphia gospel group, and by 22, he stepped into theater, writing and directing his first stage production, “Who Is He?”—an adaptation inspired by Vinnette Carroll’s Broadway musical “Your Arms Too Short to Box With God.” Over the years, he continued expanding his storytelling through original productions including “Believe,” “Redemption,” “Miracle,” and “A Time to Remember.” Beyond music and theater, Torin also built a name in journalism and media, beginning in 2014 as a writer for Root Magazine, where his first published work was an album review of Erica Campbell’s award-winning debut album “Help.” He later contributed interviews, reviews, and cover stories for multiple publications, including Doxygen Media. In 2015, he co-directed and produced the documentary series “All About Terrie” centered around recording artist Terrie Rimson. His creativity also extended into styling and creative direction for albums, magazines, and print campaigns.

During the pandemic, Torin relocated to Las Vegas, where he continued building his creative legacy by working with singers as a background vocalist, directing choirs and vocal groups, and participating in gospel brunches and live events throughout the city. In 2024, he founded Torin Derek & Friendz, a growing choir and community of singers created to uplift, inspire, and create opportunities for artists from all walks of life. What began with only three singers quickly grew into a thriving collective of voices dedicated to impact, powerful music, and authentic praise. Today, Torin continues to lead as a choir director, singer, playwright, businessman, and visionary creative, committed to building platforms for others while walking confidently in the many gifts God has given him.
